What Usually Goes Wrong After the Purchase
If your job includes buying motors and drives, you already know this: the cheapest quote rarely ends up being the cheapest order. Not every motor that works with a VFD is inverter-rated. That mismatch often shows up in maintenance logs, not in the purchase order. An inverter-rated motor has insulation built to handle voltage spikes from VFD output. The non-inverter version can work for a while, then fail at the worst possible time.
What most people don’t realize is that ‘standard lead time’ often includes buffer time vendors use to manage their production queue. It’s not necessarily how long your order will take. Ask for a shipping commitment in writing.

The TECO electric login portal is not just for checking order status. It’s where you can pull up current datasheets, dimensional drawings, and manuals before you approve a purchase.

- Servo motors and drives are for applications that need exact position, speed, or torque control. The system includes the motor, drive, feedback device, and tuning. It costs more and gives you more capability.
The question isn’t which one sounds more advanced. It’s how much precision your machine actually needs.
A conveyor with adjustable speed doesn’t need servo-grade positioning. A packaging axis that has to hold position at every stop probably does. For many applications, a TECO AC motor with a VFD is the right call. For others, a brushless motor or a packaged servo system is worth the extra cost.
The ‘servo is always better’ thinking comes from an era when VFDs were expensive and hard to set up. That’s changed. The right answer depends on your machine spec, not on who has the shiniest demo.
Step 6: Negotiate With a Line-Item Template
I’ve learned to ask ‘what’s NOT included’ before ‘what’s the price.’ A quote that lists every fee upfront is easier to trust, even if the total looks higher. A quote with a low number and empty line items is a red flag.

Once I added those two items to the lower quote, the difference was only 2%—and the lower quote had a slower response time. Not ideal, but workable. What Usually Goes Wrong After the Purchase
Three issues cause most of the rework I see on motor and drive orders:
- Nameplate mismatch. Someone checks the model number but not the voltage, frame, or motor code.

- Software access. Servo drives and VFDs need setup software. Confirm that licenses or download access are included before you order.
The most frustrating part of motor procurement is that these same problems keep showing up. You’d think written specifications would prevent mismatches, but details get lost between the sales quote and the packing slip.
Never expected the vendor with the longer lead time to deliver first. But that’s exactly what happened last year. Turns out honest lead times beat optimistic promises.
When the shipment arrives, match the nameplate against the approved quote before the truck leaves. It takes ten minutes and prevents a very expensive surprise.
